Mayor Issues Spending Freeze Because of Pandemic

The City of Mt. Carmel’s new fiscal year starts May 1st and while the city council Monday heard the first reading of the new 2020-21 budget, the spending blue-print is far from a certainty. The COVID-19 stay at home order is wrecking the amount of sales and income taxes the city will collect. The situation is so precarious that Mayor Joe Judge took action last week to stop the budget bleeding….

Finance Commissioner Eric Ikemire said the general fund is holding steady at the current time easing some of the concern heading into the new fiscal year. He said even with $200,000 in insurance proceeds from the flooded former city hall, revenues are running almost half a million dollars ahead of budgeted projections. The council will approve the new fiscal year’s budget at their next meeting on April 20th.
