Jr. Lady Aces Wrap Up Regular Season At Carmi

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

Tuesday night the Mt. Carmel Jr. Lady Aces faced Carmi away. We took 2 of the 3 games.
The 6th grade started off the night and won 11-25, 17-25. We are so proud of these girls! They sealed their undefeated season with a total of 15 wins, and zero losses! Awesome job! Avery Coston had 1 ace, Zoie Randall with 10 aces, an assist, Alivia Peach 4 aces, and a kill, Journey Loudermilk with 3 aces, an assist and a kill, Quincy Keepes with an ace. These girls will be a fun group to watch through the years.

The JV squad won in 2 sets 25-15, 25-23, Leah Lewis had an ace, 2 assists, 2 kills, Kinley Harris, 3 aces, and 1 kill, Kyleigh Smith, 4 aces 2 kills, Lyla Keepes 5 aces, 3 assists, 2 kills, Mercedes Dillard with 2 digs, Evie Sellers 2 kills. I hope this team comes together being more vocal, and gels more next year. They have talent, and can go far if they choose to. This group finished their season 12-5.

The Varsity match looked so much like a High School match, there were many long volleys, big swings, blocks and digs. The girls fought hard, but just had to many serve receive errors against a strong serving Carmi. We lost the match 18-25, 14-25, but I told them not to hang their heads about that match. We have improved a ton since we played them, but they have also. If we don’t get stuck with serve receive errors, we can be right there with them. It was a very fun match to watch with some great volleyball! Our stats against Carmi were Tenley Davis with 4 digs, Jayla Johnson 5 assists, a kill, Ava Giese 3 digs, and a block, Elyse Swanson 3 digs, Mattie Armstrong, 6 assists, and 2 digs, Maycee Randall 3 aces, an assist, a dig, 3 kills, and 2 blocks, Madellyn Bingham a kill, and a block, Anastasia Parker with a dig. Right now the Aces are 9-8 for the season.

Tonight at 6 they face Olney in class L of the SIJHSAA regionals. If we win the match we will go on to the championship at 7 playing the winner of the Carmi and Flora game at 5. Come watch some great Volleyball tonight! Dinner will be available to buy, we are selling pulled pork sandwiches, tacos in a bag, and lemonade shakeups.

Monday night Mt. Carmel Jr. Lady Aces faced Olney at home. The girls won all three matches. Starting first was the 6th grade team, they won 25-17, and 25-19.

Zoie Randall had 2 aces, 2 assists and a kill, Alivia Peach had 4 aces, an assist, and 4 kills, Journey Loudermilk an ace, and 4 assists, Quincy Keepes 5 aces, Gracee Haggard 2 aces.

The 7th grade squad won the match going 3 sets, won the first was 25-21, dropped the second 26-28, and won the last 15-8. Leah Lewis had 2 aces, and 2 assists, 2 digs, and 2 kills. The Varsity team won in 2 sets 25-18, 25-14. This is the best this team has played together all season, attitudes were great, and momentum was up, it translated big on the court. Tenley Davis had 2 assists, and 1 dig, Jayla Johnson had 4 aces, 5 assists, 2 digs and a kill, Ava Giese an assist, 3 digs, and a kill, Elyse Swanson an ace, 3 digs, Evie Knapp 2 assists, and a kill, Mattie Armstrong 6 assists, and a kill, Maycee Randall 6 aces, 6 kills, and 5 blocks, Madellyn Bingham 2 kills, 2 blocks, Anastasia Parker with a dig.

Jr. Lady Aces Sweep Flora

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

Last night the Mt. Carmel Jr. Lady Aces Volleyball team faced Flora at home and won all three matches.

The C team started up first with a 25-20, 18-17 win. Flora kept the ball alive and our girls had to move to the ball. Avery Coston had an ace, Zoie Randall with an ace, an assist, and 2 kills, Alivia Peach had 5 aces, 5 assists, and 2 kills, Journey Loudermilk had an ace, and 4 kills, Quincey Keepes 2 aces, and 3 assists, Madelyn Meadows had an ace, and Addison Mobley with 2 assists.

The JV team won 25-19, 25-13. The first game we started a little shaky with serving errors, but got the momentum going and carried it to the second match. Leah Lewis had 2 aces, an assist, and 1 kill, Kinley Harris had a kill, Kyleigh Smith had 2 aces and a block, Lyla Keepes with 5 aces, an assist, and 2 kills, Mercedes Dillard with a kill, Evie Sellers with a kill and a block.

The Varsity bunch started out a little slow on defense. Flora mixed it up with a good amount of pushed, some tips and a few hits, and we just had to move. We started our momentum a little to late to win the first set, but dominated the second, then had to come from behind in the third for an exciting win. Set scores were 23-25, 25-12, 15-12. Jayla Johnson had 3 aces, 6 assists, 2 digs, and 3 kills, Ava Giese 2 aces, and a kill, Elyse Swanson 2 aces, and 6 digs, Mattie Armstrong 2 aces, 5 assists, Maycee Randall 5 aces, an assist, 5 kills, and 2 blocks, Madellyn Bingham 4 kills and a block, Anastasia Parker a dig.

Jr. Lady Aces Sweep On 8th Grade Night

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

Last night the Jr. Lady Aces took all three matches against the Local St. Mary’s/Allendale team. We had a packed house for 8th grade night and there was so much energy in the gym, it was awesome!

The C- team started us up with a 25-14, 25-9 win.  More aces this match, vs during the weekend we had more kills. Avery Coston 1 ace, and an assist, Zoie Randall 7 aces, Alivia Peach 6 aces, and 3 kills, Journey Loudermilk 8 aces an assist, Quincy Keepes 2 aces, Ty Marie McCleave 1 assist, Madelyn Meadows 1 ace.

The JV team won with commanding scores of 25-9, 25-12, like the C match we had many aces and not as many kills. Girls were louder than last match and I liked seeing that, we still need to clean up our 10 serving errors, but we do have a very aggressive lineup of servers.

During the JV match Leah had 4 ace, 2 assists. Kinley Harris 3 aces, Kyleigh Smith an ace, a block, and a kill, Lyla Keepes 12 aces, and 1 kill, Mercedes Dillard a kill, Evie Sellers 2 aces, Brynlie Mounts 2 aces, and Madison Riggs with 2 aces.

In the Varsity match you could feel the energy! We had a huge loud student section and the girls were feeding off of it. The SMS team put up a scrappy defense and we had some very long volleys. The final scores were Aces 25-19, 25-18. Girls were playing aggressively, but we did get caught a few times in miscommunication so we hope to get that out of our system before regionals. I was glad to see some of our players come out with big excitement that I haven’t seen yet.  Tenley Davis had 1 kill, Jayla Johnson 9 assists, 3 kills, Ava Giese 2 aces, 2 assists, 1 dig, Elyse Swanson with 5 digs, Evie Knapp with 1 kill, and 2 assists, Mattie Armstrong  with 2 aces, 6 assists, Maycee Randall 3 aces 4 kills and a block, Madellyn Bingham 2 kills and 1 block, Anastasia Parker 3 digs, and Miley Peach with an assist. It was a very fun night of Aces Volleyball!  We play Fairfield away tomorrow night, then come watch us play at home again on Wednesday against Flora.

Jr. Lady Aces Win Own 6th Grade Tourney

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

The 6th grade tournament we hosted this weekend went very well. The host team Mt. Carmel came away with the first place trophy and St. Mary’s 6th grade took second. Albion grade school came away with 3rd and the the St. Mary’s 5th finished 4th.

The 6th grade teams are usually refereed by 8th graders, so this tournament helps them learn in a more official atmosphere and get comfortable with the way a game is run with certified referees before stepping up the next year.

Starting the day we faced the SMS 6th grade team and won with scores of 25-16, 27-25. The second match the girls struggled with keeping serves in, and went behind 21-24. Coming back and winning from that deficit was very big. It was an exciting win for them. Next up we faced SMS 5th grade, and won 25-11, 25-12.

The last match of the day we were up against AGS. The girls were able to seal the first place trophy with 25-17, 25-19 scores.

Lezlie and I were very happy with the way the girl kept trying to pass, set, hit. At this age it is key for them to understand attacking the ball will always create wins.

We had stats of 39 kills for the day as a team total….Wow! That’s so awesome for 6th grade, and a big jump from where they started at the beginning.

Takeaways from all 3 games combined were Avery Coston 8 aces, 4 assist, and 2 kills. Zoie Randall 13 aces, 5 assists, and 9 kills, Alivia Peach took away 2 aces, and 11 kills, Journey Loudermilk 1 ace, 3 assist, and 5 kills, Quincy Keepes 8 aces, 2 assists, and 5 kills, Gracee Haggard 2 aces, 1 assist, 2 kills, Ty Marie McCleave 1 ace, 1 kills, Madelyn Meadows 1 ace, Addison Mobley 2 aces, 1 assist, and 4 kills. Go aces!

Jr. Lady Aces Defeat Ice & Olney

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

Wow what an exciting night last night for Mt. Carmel Volleybal! With the threat of Ice we will braved the way to Olney and came up big with 3 wins.

The C team started us off with a 16-25, 11-25 win. We just all around controlled the ball better with our passes, and had good serving. Highlights were Zoie Randall 1 kill, Alivia Peach 12 aces, a kill, Journey Loudermilk 2 aces, an assist, and a kill. Quincy Keepes 7 aces, Madelyn Meadows an ace, Addison Mobley 2 aces, one assist.

The JV team rallied from behind in the first set to win 21-25, the second set we dropped 25-15, we got in a serve receive funk, along with some hitting errors. The third set the girls came out with aggressive serves racking up aces, passing on target to setter and getting kills winning 15-25. Takeaways were Leah Lewis with 1 ace, 7 assists, 2 kills, Kinley Harris 4 aces, an assist, 4 digs, and 2 kills, Kyleigh Smith picked up 5 aces, and 2 kills, Lyla Keepes 7 aces, 9 assists, 2 kills, Mercedes Dillard a dig, Evie Sellers 3 aces, 6 kills, and a block, Mylee Farmer had a dig, Sophie Banks with 2 aces.

The Varsity squad started slow in the first set, Olney had some servers sending over bullets that we struggled with. We were down 19-11 before we started gaining momentum with good serving, and attacking, to outscore them 14-3 to close the set with a 22-25 win. That is an awesome comeback and hard to do! The next set we had command of the entire match. The momentum was ours and we never lost it. The girls put it all together, serving, passing attacking, beautiful sets, and having fun! Taking the win 8-25. Some stats were Tenley Davis 4 aces, Jayla Johnson 1 ace. 6 assists, and a dig, Ava Giese 2 aces, a dig, and 2 kills, Else Swanson an ace, and 2 digs, Mattie Armstrong 2 aces 6 assists, Maycee Randall 5 aces, 4 kills, Madellyn Bingham 3 kills, and Anastasia Parker with solid passing.

We were so thankful everyone made it home safely after the roads iced over. These girls are starting to find their groove with 15 combined wins over the last 5 match-ups. For the season the Varsity squad has a 6-5 win loss record, they are playing different ball now versus the start of the season. The JV has an 8-4 win loss, and our 6th graders are still undefeated with 7 wins. Let’s Go!

Jr. Lady Aces Continue To Roll With Sweep Of New Hope

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

The Jr. Lady Aces traveled to Fairfield to face New Hope last night. All three teams took the win. The C team started us off with a 25-13, 25-18 win. The girls kept the ball going on some long volleys and really scrambled for the ball. Highlights were Zoie Randall with 3 aces, Alivia Peach 6 aces and 2 kills, Quincy Keepes 5 aces, Ty Marie McCleave 1 ace, Madelyn Meadows an ace, and an assist, Addison Mobley 4 aces.

The JV team won a 2 set match, first set 25-17 and second one they came away with an exciting 29-27 win. The end was back and forth for a good bit, and gave the crowd a show. They improved on transitioning off the net to get in bigger approaches. Takeaways were Leah Lewis with 6 assists, a dig, Kinley Harris 4 aces, and a kill, Kyleigh Smith picked up an ace, and a kill, Lyla Keepes 5 aces, 7 assists, 3 kills, Mercedes Dillard a kill, Evie Sellers an 5 aces, 3 kills, and a block, Sophie Banks with 3 aces, and one dig.

The Varsity had a commanding lead of the first match winning 25-9, they took the second set as well 25-22. They were also getting off the net faster, calling hits, and taking big swings. I’m happy tonight with their confidence to attack often. Some highlights were Tenley Davis with a Dig, Jayla Johnson 4 aces, 4 assists, and 2 kills, Ava Giese with a kill, Elyse Swanson with 2 aces, and a dig, Mattie Armstrong 5 aces, 5 assists, Maycee Randall 9 aces, 3 kills, Madellyn Bingham 4 kills, Anastasia Parker with solid serve receive and Miley Peach with 2 aces.

The win sweep was nice, but we will be tested more tonight as we face Olney who is one of our regional competitors. The game is Away starting with C team at 5:15.

Jr. Lady Aces Sweep West Salem

From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

The Jr. Lady Aces had an exciting home match last night facing West Salem. The C team started us off with a 25-17, 25-19 win. The girls had many pass, set, and kill series. These make the coaches super happy, especially at the C level. Avoiding free balls and attacking, sealed the win. Highlights were Avery Coston with an assist, Zoie Randall with an ace, an assist, and a kill, Alivia Peach with an assist, and 3 aces, Journey Loudermilk with 6 aces, and 2 kills, Quincy Keepes picked up 6 aces, 2 assist, 2 kills, Morgan Meadows 1 assist, and Addison Mobley 1 kill.

The JV team won an exciting 3 set series dropping the first 23-25, then taking next 25-20, 15-9. We struggled at the beginning of the first match in serve receive, but once we started passing we were able to set up many hitters, and that kept them giving us many free balls. They are getting more aggressive each match. Takeaways were Leah Lewis with one ace, 4 assists, and 2 kills, Kinley Harris 1 kill, Kyleigh Smith an ace, a block, and a kill, Lyla Keepes 4 aces, 5 assists, 1 kill, Mercedes Dillard a dig, Evie Sellers with 5 aces, 3 kills, and a block, Brynlie Mounts an ace, Mylee Farmer with a dig.

The Varsity had good control of the match, also setting up many attackers. They moved really well on defense and we had many hitters ready, and calling to attack the ball. They won in 2 sets 25-16, 25-19. Some highlights were Tenley Davis with an Ace, and 2 digs, Jayla Johnson 3 aces, 8 assists, 2 digs, and 2 kills, Ava Giese with 2 digs, and a kill, Elyse Swanson with an ace, and a dig, Mattie Armstrong 3 assists, 1 dig, Maycee Randall 2 aces, 8 kills, Madellyn Bingham 3 kills, and Anastasia Parker with a dig.

It’s always a fun night when all three groups take the win. I was happy to see the girls get their victory’s on their home court. They have been practicing hard and it’s paying off. Tonight all 3 teams face New Hope away in Fairfield.

Jr. Lady Aces Sweep Jackets

Jr. Lady Aces Volleyball Hosts Carmi In Home Opener

Story & Photos From Coach Bonnie Keepes:

Mt. Carmel Jr. Lady Aces opened up their first home match last night against Carmi. They C team won 25-10 the first set and 25-12 the second.

This team has many strong servers and they really put the pressure on Carmi’s serve receive. They are also moving quick and diving. They are just not letting the ball drop, and that’s the name of the game.
Zoie Randall had 5 aces, Alivia Peach 2, Journey Loudermilk 2, Quincy Keepes 11, Madelyn Meadows took away 1 and Addison Mobley with 2. That’s quite a few aces in one match, great job girls.

The JV squad beat Carmi in two games 25-11, 25-18, our girls are starting to communicate better and show us more of what they can do. I hope they can build on this game coming into the weekend tournament. Leah Lewis had 1 ace, 2 kills, and 3 assists, Kyleigh Smith with 3 aces and 2 kills, Lyla Keepes had 11 aces, 4 assists, 2 kills. Evie Sellers had 5 aces, Brynlie Mounts with one ace, and Sophie Banks put up a dig.

The Varsity match was hard fought, Carmi took both sets 18-25, 21-25. Carmi must have some girls that play club together in the off season, they were clicking very well for early in the season showing strong offense and defense.

But our girls have shown fight and are getter better. I can see a huge improvement from when they played Monday. They are growing every match. When we attacked the ball out of the front we had success and will get there more when we can control the pass.

The rally at the end of the second game was pure excitement, and fun to watch. Even if we didn’t take the win we ended with good momentum. Tenley Davis had one dig, Jayla Johnson had 3 aces, 3 assists, one dig and a kill, Ava Giese had one dig,

Elyse Swanson with 3 digs, and a kill, Evie Knapp with an assist, Mattie Armstrong with an ace, 3 assists, Maycee Randall had 4 kill, and 2 blocks.

The Lady Aces will travel to Albion on Saturday for a JV tournament in the morning and the Varsity will play in the afternoon. GO ACES!

MCJHS-Albion Volleyball Report

From Bonnie Keepes:

MCJHS faced Albion grade school last night. The C team had 3 exciting sets coming up on top. 25-23, 12-15, 15-9

Avery Coston had 5 aces, Zoie Randall had 4, and Alivia peach 1, Gracee Haggard with 2 aces and Madelyn Meadows also had 2. They connected on a couple pass set hit series as well.

The JV team showed us what happens when communication does not happen in volleyball. It’s a sport where it is vital for success and I’m having a hard time getting it out of this group.

They lost the first set 13-25, missed serves factored in as well. They rallied back and took the second set 25-21 putting on some service pressure but still not talking much. Serve receive broke down and Albion took the final set for the win 14-25. I hope this match lights a fire under them because they are capable of so much more.

Some high notes were Leah Lewis with 2 aces 2 assists and a kill, Kinley Harris had one dig, Lyla Keepes had 5 aces, 2 assists and one kill. Mercedes Dillard had 2 digs, Evie Sellers put up 2 aces, and Brynlie Mounts had 1 kill.

The Varsity squad came out focused Albion is a tough match up with a few big hitters. They took the first set 19-25, and the second 25-21. Tenley Davis had 1 kill, Jayla Johnson had 1 assist, and 2 kills, Ava Giese 2 digs, Elyse Swanson 2 aces, 1 dig, Mattie Armstrong had 2 aces, 3 assists and 2 digs, Maycee Randall with 1 ace, 2 kills, and 1 block, Anastasia Parker with one Ace.

These girls have to get the ball to their setter so we can run our offense. When we do that big things will start happening.

We will also work on our defense and be ready to face them again this weekend. The aces have had 2 tough match ups to start the season with some teams that have started clicking. I know we can get there, they have the fight. We face Carmi for our home open Thursday at 5:15.

Jackets Battle To The End Against Meridian At State Tourney

From Bob Bowser:

On Saturday, February 5th, Yellow Jackets Basketball traveled to Pinckneyville for the SIJHSAA Class S first game at State to play Meridian.  The Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start and found themselves down 8-0 before rebounding behind Elliott Acree to trail Meridian 16-9.  Elliott had six points in the quarter and Brendan Bowser had an old-fashioned three point play for three points.  In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets nearly doubled up Meridian and only found themselves down 22-20.  Elliott Acree had six points in the quarter, Brendan Bowser hit a 3-ball for three points, and Rhett Andrews had a bucket for two points.  The Yellow Jackets came out strong in the third quarter and even took the lead at 23-22, but Meridian would barely win the third quarter and lead 35-30 with seven minutes to play in the game.  Free throws for the Yellow Jackets were fantastic in the third quarter, as Brendan Bowser was 2-3 and Rhett Andrews was 4-4.  They each added a bucket and Brendan had four points in the quarter and Rhett had six points.  In the fourth quarter, Meridian would expand their lead to as much as 12 points, but the Yellow Jackets didn't give up.  Brendan Bowser had a two-point bucket and a three-ball for five points and Rhett Andrews had a bucket and two free throws for four points.  In the end, Meridian defeated the Yellow Jackets 47-39 to move on to the Elite 8 of SIJHSAA Class S State Tournament.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Brendan Bowser with 15 points, Elliott Acree with 12 points, and Rhett Andrews with 12 points.  The boys played an outstanding game.  If we could have grabbed a few more rebounds on the defensive end and put a few more of our layups/short shots in the basket, the outcome could have been different.  In the end, the boys gave it their all and made it exciting and close.  The Yellow Jackets finish the season 13-10 and have won 3 Regional Championships in a row.  Fantastic season!!
