IHSA Sports Open Up Further As State Moves To Phase 5

The state of Illinois moved to Phase 5 as a part of the Restore Illinois pandemic relief plan on June 11, 2021. As a result of the move to Phase 5, many IHSA sports and activities have greater autonomy in scheduling, as well as in hosting fans. Some highlights of the move to Phase 5 include…

  • All IHSA sports can now schedule contests/meets with and against any other high school in the state, as well as with out-of-state opponents.

  • There are no longer any spectator limitations. All IHSA host venues, indoor and outdoor, may host fans at 100% capacity.

  • Masks are no longer required for student-athletes, coaches, and officials in low- and medium-risk outdoor sports.

In order to help with social distancing and limit gatherings, the IHSA is utilizing digital ticketing at all remaining Super-Sectional and State Final venues for the remainder of the 2021 school year. GoFan is the official digital ticketing partner of the IHSA. Fans can purchase Super-Sectional and State Final tickets via the GoFan app or at GoFan.co/IHSA

The IHSA Girls and Boys Track & Field State Finals will employ Eastern Illinois University’s internal digital ticketing platform. State track & field tickets are available for purchase by clicking here.

More information can be found on the IHSA's COVID-19 resource page.

Mt. Carmel's Norrick To Play In ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOL SHRINE GAME SET FOR JUNE 19TH

NOTE: Mt. Carmel’s Caleb Norrick has been named to the Red team as an outside linebacker.

Bloomington, IL – The Illinois Coaches Association and the Shriners of Illinois will host the 47th annual Illinois High School Shrine Game on June 19th at Tucci Stadium on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. Kick-off for the 47th annual game is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th at 11:00a.m.  The pregame festivities will begin at the stadium starting at 10am.  One hundred six of the state’s best football players participate in this all-star game to raise money for Shriners Hospital for Children, the official philanthropy of Shriners International. More information about scheduled events, along with rosters for both the Red and Blue teams, can be found at www.ilshrinegame.com.   Admission for this All Star Game is $10 and can be purchased at the gate.

Each year at the Shrine Game, two patients from the Shiners Hospital for Children are chosen to be the prince and princess. The princess is Hadley Holmes from Marion who is a patient at the Shriners Hospital in St Louis. The prince is Tim Bannon from Chicago who is a patient at the Shriners Hospital in Chicago. The prince and princess are honorary representatives from each hospital that will benefit from the money raised through the game. We weren’t able to have last year’s event, but we still raised nearly $20,000 that went directly to providing outstanding medical care for children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Our goal is to create a fun and exciting environment for the players, families, Shrine kids, and Shriners and to make this a signature event for the Shriners of Illinois.   The featured banquet speaker will be Michael Bates from Divernon.  Michael participated in this event in 2011 and played football at Illinois College.

New Coach Retains Buss On UE Staff

EVANSVILLE – Before the summer even begins, University of Evansville head women's basketball coach Robyn Scherr-Wells has rounded-out her assistant coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Along with Kara Carlson, Scherr-Wells has announced the retention of Tyra Buss as Assistant Coach and the promotion of Tanaeya BoClair from Director of Basketball Operations to Assistant Coach.

Following her first season in coaching, Buss continues her position with the Aces following a season that saw marked improvement from Evansville's backcourt.

"It was a no-brainer to retain Tyra in the assistant coach role," said Scherr-Wells. "She has a bright basketball mind and will be excellent on the court in developing our guards. It was apparent quickly that she sees player development in a similar way to me and I am confident that our guards will benefit tremendously from her mentorship."

Joining Evansville prior to the 2020-21 campaign, BoClair handled much of the work behind the scenes. Early on during Scherr-Wells' time as head coach, BoClair made an impression.

"As I spent time with Tanaeya, it became apparent to me that she has such a bright future in women's basketball," said Scherr-Wells. "As she has been working double duty filling in as an assistant as well as serving as our Director of Operations during my transition, it became obvious to me that she deserved to be promoted to the assistant coach role. I am excited to watch her excel in her new role and I know she will be a big asset to our program as an assistant coach."

The Aces have shaped their coaching staff and roster in just over a month, adding six talented new players and rounding-out the coaching staff.

Lady Aces Soccer Rout Salem, 8-1

From Coach Ed Berberich:

The Lady Aces Soccer team traveled to Salem for a match Wednesday evening, beating the Lady Wildcats 8-1. Maya Smith scored 2 quick goals in the 3rd & 4th minutes to start the scoring barrage, assisted by Rylie Webb on both, with a key pass each from Flynn Guard, on the 1st goal, & from Makayla Beesley on the 2nd. Smith scored 3 more quick goals in the 14th, 16th & 18th minutes, again assisted by Webb, for a total of 5 goals in the match for Smith. Webb added 2 goals of her own in the 21st & 26th minutes, the 1st on an assist from Flynn Guard & the 2nd assisted by Piper Belt. Kinze Cusick scored the 8th & final goal for the Aces with 8 minutes still remaining in the 1st half. Salem scored their goal in the last minute of play. For the match, the Lady Aces took 24 shots, 17 on frame, & created 12 additional scoring chances. Katelyn Kline & Rilee Riggs combined in goal, with each getting a save. Salem took 3 shots, 2 on frame.

We still need to work on our intensity level a bit, but we were able to jump out to a quick a lead in this one so it wasn't really a factor tonight. Moving forward, we'll want to work on raising that a bit as we'll eventually be facing some teams that won't allow us to get away with not bringing that aggressive mindset from the start. With the quick goals we were able to move the new girls around a lot tonight to get them some experience in new positions, which can be really useful in their development. So far this season, we were hesitant to do that too much since they really needed to get that experience at the positions we were looking for them to mostly be playing, but they're starting to look a little more comfortable with the game so we wanted to throw some new things at them tonight. They responded well to it & it'll only help them long-term, which helps the team as a whole.

The win brings the Lady Aces' record on the season to 4-1 (1-0). They next travel to Metropolis to play Massac County on the morning of Saturday 5/22, followed by a home rematch with Salem, and senior night, on Monday 5/24 at 4:30 pm.
