What a great turn out for the first annual Beall Woods Bolt! Runners and walkers enjoyed the new smooth pavement throughout the park. The 3 mile course began at the Visitor Center, included the campground loop, and passed by the boat dock down by the lake. The park staff greatly appreciated everyone who attended, participated, and assisted with the event!

Mt. Carmel Girl Part Of AAU National Volleyball Champion

On June 17-20, Mt. Carmel’s Ashby Willis and her team ASICS KIVA 14 Red (Louisville, KY) competed in the AAU 14 Open National Volleyball Championships.

On day one they played 3 matches going 3-0 on the day.

Day two they were 1-1 but still in the hunt for Gold!

Day three they went 3-0 with the much needed first place in their pool to be able to compete on championship day for the national championship.

In the quarterfinal Thursday Morning they beat Sports Performance out of Chicago putting them in the semi-final match against 3 time national championship winner Vaqueras out of Puerto Rico.

They won the semi’s putting them in the national championship game against Municiana out of Muncie IN.

They won that match in two sets, 25-10, 26-24 coming away with the National Championship Title!!

Congrats Ashby!! She is the daughter of Rick and Syreeta Willis of Mt. Carmel.

WARRIORS WIN CONFERENCE ALL-SPORTS TROPHY

Mt. Carmel, IL – With the most dominating Season in Conference History, the Wabash Valley Athletic Department was recently awarded the 2019 GRAC All-Sports Trophy. The Warrior Teams of Volleyball, Softball, Women’s Basketball, Men’s Basketball, and Baseball combined for a Conference Record of 97-15 in the 2018-19 season.

This was just the second time in GRAC History that four (4) sports, from one school, won the Conference title in the same season (WVC in 2011.)

In addition, Warrior Coaches Paul Schnarre (Softball), Jack Trosper (Women’s Basketball), Mike Carpenter (Men’s Basketball), and Rob Fournier (Baseball), were named “GRAC Coach of the Year” respectively. Those four WVC teams went a combined 92-6 in GRAC play, and each won the Conference Championship.

Warrior Athletic Director Mike Carpenter said in a statement, “What a way to close out the season. We play in one of the toughest Conferences in the Country, and to win the All-Sports Trophy says a great deal about the commitment and dedication of our Student-Athletes. I cannot say enough about how great this group was to work with, collectively, on and off the playing field. Our coaches did a great job molding these kids into Championship teams that our fans and boosters were proud to support. Winning the All-Sports Trophy is “icing on the cake!”

WVC ARCHER NAMED TO USA ARCHERY 2019 COLLEGIATE ARCHERY ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

Mt. Carmel, IL – Wabash Valley College archer Jacob Quillen, from West Salem, IL, has been named to the USA Archery 2019 Collegiate Archery Academic All-American Team in the Men’s Bowhunter Division. This prestigious award recognizes not only excellence on the archery field, but the hard work and dedication required to balance a heavy practice and competition schedule with excellence in the classroom.

In order to make the Academic All-American Team, archers must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 and rank in the top 25 percent of scores in their collegiate division and class at the 2019 US National Indoor Championships.

2019 MCHS Softball Award Winners

The Lady Aces won their first Regional Championship since 2005. They had zero seniors on the team and 15 freshmen, with another 10+ freshmen on the way next year.

Aces 100th Football Anniversary Has Big Plans For Upcoming Season

The 100th Anniversary of Golden Aces Football Planning Committee is pleased to announce activities will be held at every home football game this season to commemorate the 100th year of Mt. Carmel Football.

The 1981 State Championship Team will be recognized during halftime of the Harrisburg game on August 30th. A special reception will also be held following the game.

The state runner-up teams from 1974, 2001, 2002, and 2011 will all be recognized at halftime of the Mt. Vernon, Indiana game, on Friday, September 6th, again with a reception following the game.

Homecoming is Friday, September 20th. All alumni of football, band and cheerleading will be recognized as the Aces take on Olney.

Friday, September 27th will be a special “Friends of Aces Football” night as the Aces take on Alton Marquette.

Saturday, October 19th the Aces take on Dupo at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day, and all former Aces’ coaches will be recognized. All living former head coaches including Larry Lockhart, John Hart and Darren Peach will be recognized at halftime. A special reception will also follow the game.

All postgame receptions will be open to the public. 
More details will be forthcoming. Commemorative shirts, posters, videos and more will soon be available. A kickoff dinner is also being planned.

Currently the committee is asking that all players from the 1981 (Friday, August 30th), 1974, 2001, 2002, and 2011 teams (Friday, September 6th) please mark your calendars for your recognition night. Allendale/SMS Co-op Softball To Play at 4th Street Field This Fall

The new co-op junior high school softball team between St. Mary’s and Allendale has gotten the go ahead to play their home games at the Alma McCauslin Field on 4th Street. City Commissioner Justin Dulgar presented the request to the council for the games to be played there this fall.

The Lady Aces started the scoring with a 2 out, 2 RBI single by Addie Drone. Flor la then answered with 5 runs to take a 5-2 to the 4th inning.

In the 4th inning, the Lady Aces batted around and scored 4 runs to take a 6-5 lead. Flora would score 2 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to take a 9-6 lead to the bottom of the 6th inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, Pearson, Fuller, and Daum all singled to start the inning. After scoring a run on an error, Sierra Hannah tied the game with a 2 RBI double.

Fuller retired Flora in order in the top of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, after and error and a single by Pearson, the Lady Aces had runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and Fuller at the plate. She sent an 0-1 pitched deep to left field for the Walk-Off Homerun to win the Regional Championship.

This was the first Regional Championship in softball since 2005.

“I am so proud of this group of girls. Faith Fuller has been playing hurt for about 2 weeks now, and she fought the pain all game long and came up huge for us.

We had been struggling a little bit at the plate lately but the girls came up big with 17 hits, and a lot of those were huge 2 out hits to score runs.

This group has been so coachable and just a joy to be around every day. You wouldn’t know this is a team without any seniors on it. They are very smart softball players for their age and super talented. Our juniors and even our sophomores have done a great job of leading this team.”

The Lady Aces now play in the Newton Sectional on Tuesday against Teutopolis at 6:30.

Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity Grabs Lead In Sixth Inning To Defeat Johnston City

• Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity stole the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over Johnston City on Thursday. The game was tied at two with Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity batting in the top of the sixth when.
• Johnston City fired up the offense in the first inning. Fischer drove in one when he singled.
• In the top of the fifth inning, Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity tied things up at two when Bret Doansingled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
• Kaleb Applebey earned the victory on the mound for Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity. He allowed zero hits and zero runs over two and a third innings, striking out six and walking one.
• McPheron took the loss for Johnston City. He lasted five and a third innings, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out five and walking one.
• Cade Newkirk started the game for Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity. He allowed three hits and two runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out 11
• Doan led Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity with two hits in four at bats. Mt. Carmel Golden Aces Varsity was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error.

The Lady Aces trailed 1-0 from the 2nd inning until the Bottom of the 6th. Great defensive plays by Lexi Ballard, Kami Pearson and the rest of the Lady Aces kept the Indians at 1 run.

With 1 out and a runner on 2nd in the 6th, Kami Pearson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Stormie Devine from after a throwing error.

After a leadoff walk in the Top of the 8th, Kami Pearson threw out the leadoff hitter trying to steal second base.

In the Bottom of the 8th, Stormie Devine drew a walk, and made it to 3rd on a couple of passed balls by the Indians. This set the stage for Kami Pearson, who hit a rocket into left center for the walk-off base hit.

The Lady Aces advance to the Regional Championship Friday at 4:30 against the host Flora Wolfgals. The Lady Aces are looking to win the first Softball Regional Championship since 2006.

Wade Ruth Signs To Play Golf At LTC

MCHS Senior Wade Ruth signed today to play golf at Lincoln Trail College In Robinson. The signing took place over the noon hour at the MCHS Library.

Three Lady Rockets Compete At State Track Meet

Three St. Mary’s Girls’ Track team members participated in the SIJHSA Class S State Track Meet held at Herrin, IL, on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Sarah McCorkle finished 2nd in the 7th Grade 100M Dash with a time of 13.87.

Ava Harrington finished 9th in the 100M Hurdles with her personal best time of 18.78. She, also, competed in the 100M Dash and finished 13th with a time of 14.57.

Lily Keepes competed in the 1600M Run (6:57.07).

Allendale Holds Annual Sports Banquet

On Monday, May 13th, Allendale School held its Yellow Jackets Sports Banquet at the Allendale Ruritan Building.  The evening started with a meal prepared by the Allendale Ruritan Club. 

The speaker for the evening was Head Coach of the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces, Coach Tim Willis.  Coach Willis talked with those in attendance about the importance of Energy, Effort, and Enthusiasm. 

After the speaker, Baseball and Cross Country participants were recognized even though they had their co-op banquet in the Fall. 

The Yellow Jackets Cheerleaders were then awarded by Coach Kila Garrett and Assistant Karla McCowen:  Josey McCowen, Chloe Cusick, Jordis Riley, Kenadie Homan, Avery Swift, Kennedy Adams, Ashleigh McGinnis, and Isabella Monroy. 

Coach Rich Casburn then recognized the basketball team, which included the following special awards:  JD Bowser (MVP and Most Points), Chandler Cusick (Most Improved), Trent Casburn (Free Throw Champion), Wyatt Gher (Most Rebounds), Matt Jackson (Most Assists), and Kollin Kelsey (Most Steals). 

Coach Diana Morgan, along with assistants Codie Ford and Alexa Price awarded volleyball with the following special awards:  Kristin Richards (A-team MVP/Best Passer), Emma Baxley (Most Improved/Most Aces/Most Blocks/Most Spikes), Jordis Riley (A-team Server/B-team Most Improved), Lauren Fisher (A-team Server), Chandler Cusick (B-team MVP/Most Aces), Chloe Cusick (B-team Most Spikes), Olivia Smith (Rookie of the Year/B-team Best Passer/Best Server/C-team Best Passer/Best Server).

The final award of the night, an annual award presented to the top athlete participating in at least 3 sports, was presented by Superintendent Bob Bowser, the All Season Athlete Award.  It was presented to JD Bowser for his outstanding participation in Baseball, Cross Country, Basketball, and Track.

Lady Aces' Season Ends In OT at Salem Regional

From Coach Ed Berberich:

The Lady Aces traveled to Centralia to face off against Salem in the first round of Regionals, losing 3-2 in overtime. The Lady Aces scored the first goal of the game in the 8th minute on a Maya Smith goal, assisted by Rylie Webb. Salem would later tie the game up 1-1 but the Lady Aces took the lead again in the 52nd minute on another Maya Smith goal, again assisted by Rylie Webb with a key pass from Ally Kendall. Salem tied the game once again, at 2-2, on a penalty shot with a little over 8 minutes remaining in the game, which is how regulation time ended. Salem scored with 3 minutes left in the first overtime period for their only lead of the game, and hung on for the 3-2 victory. The Lady Aces took 20 shots in the game, with 12 on frame, and created 11 additional scoring chances, and had 6 interceptions. Allison Thread had 8 saves in goal. Salem took 8 shots in the game, 4 on frame. 

The girls played hard & moved the ball well, creating a lot of good scoring opportunities. They won the possession battle by a wide margin, and also had a significant lead both in shots & quality scoring chances. Our back line defenders were also pretty aggressive in trying to intercept incoming passes to the Salem attackers and they were able to start off a lot of attacks from the back. So overall it was a good performance by the whole team. We certainly played well enough to win, but just made a few mistakes here & there that ended up hurting us. That's kind of been the story of the season in almost all of our games, and I'm really proud of the girls for the way they've handled so many close losses. There were only 2 games where we really had no chance of getting the win. All of the rest were close matches, that could've gone either way if not for just a handful of plays. For that to happen all season as it did could have really had a negative impact on their attitudes & effort but for the most part they kept their positive attitudes and played through it all. As a result, they showed a lot of improvement from last year to this season. Moving forward, we'll miss the graduating seniors, but if the returning players stick with it & keep working at their games, we expect to see  continued improvement.
