Mayor Says City To Consider Moving To Home Rule

During last week’s state of the city address, Mt. Carmel Mayor Joe Judge said he would like to see the Statehouse give local government more flexibility in designating which revenue streams best meet the needs of individual communities and give them the latitude to develop them…

Since Mt. Carmel has less than 25,000 residents, the home rule question would have to approved by city voters in a general election. Currently, there are 221 home rule communities in Illinois. Municipalities with more than 25,000 residents automatically achieves home rule status. City voters several years ago rejected a referendum to move Mt. Carmel to home rule status.
