Mt. Carmel Man Arrested On Child Pornography Charge

On 5/13/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Mickeal S. Mellette, age 45, of Mt. Carmel, for Child Pornography following an investigation into allegations that he possessed lewd images of individuals he knew to be under the age of 18.  During the investigation, multiple images were located and acknowledged by Mellette.  Mellette was arrested without incident and transported to the Wabash County Jail.  Mellette is being held pending a bond setting by a judge.

Mt. Carmel Man Held On $75,000 Cash Bond Following Friday Arrest

On 5/12/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Sean R. Willis, age 28, of Mt. Carmel, on a Wabash County Warrant for Child Pornography and Violation of the Sex Offender Registry.  Willis was arrested at his residence in the 100 block of South Drive without incident.  Willis is being held at the Wabash County Jail on a $75,000 cash bond.  This case was investigated by agents of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and assisted by officers of the Mt. Carmel Police Department.  

Two Stages at Wabash Roots’N’Que

The Wabash County Museum will host the Wabash Roots’N’Que “Workshop Stage” this coming Saturday, May 20th on Mt. Carmel’s Market Street. The Illinois Arts Council and Mt. Carmel Public Utility, along with the Museum, are partnering to make the Workshop Stage possible, on the following schedule:

Carmel Lions Club offering Cotton Candy. You might even want to come early and visit the Wabash County Farmers Market, open from 8am-11am.

 The Wabash County Museum is located at 320 N Market Street, just 3 doors up from Merchants Park in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Reception Held To Mark FNB Purchase Of Wabash Savings Bank

Today marks the start of a new era in banking in Wabash County as one longtime financial institution has merged with another. On Friday, the First National Bank of Allendale and Wabash Savings Bank completed their purchase and assumption transaction. Friday also marked the retirement of two long time local bankers as Wabash Savings President William Hackler the third and CFO James Price ended long careers in banking. In addition to Hackler and Jim Price, Wabash Savings employees Reena Howell and Donna Goings also retired on Friday. First National Bank of Allendale currently has $365 million in assets.

ISP RELEASES VIDEO FOR OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR MT. VERNON

MT. VERNON – The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Internal Investigation continues its investigation into the discharge of an Illinois State Police Officer’s duty weapon during a motorist assist on May 9, 2023 at 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 64 near milepost 72.  During the incident, an altercation occurred and 23-year-old Brandon L. Griffin of Albuquerque, New Mexico brandished  a firearm.  Griffin and an officer exchanged gunfire and Griffin was fatally shot.  An ISP officer was also shot and was taken to an area hospital.  The Officer has since been released and is recovering at home.

 Griffin’s wife, 31-year-old Christine J. Santos, was present at the time of the incident and is currently being held at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on a no-bond arrest warrant out of New Mexico for bond violations on a pending aggravated assault with a firearm case in which Griffin was her co-defendant.

 This video is being released after consultation with and authorization by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney.  ISP provided Griffin’s mother the opportunity to review the video before its release to the public.

 This remains an ongoing investigation being conducted by ISP and is under review by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office.  No additional information is available at this time.

The First National Bank of Allendale and Wabash Savings Bank Complete Merger Transaction

The First National Bank of Allendale and Wabash Savings Bank, the two oldest financial institutions based in Wabash County, are pleased to announce the completion of their purchase and assumption transaction. Wabash Savings was chartered in 1890. The First National Bank of Allendale was chartered in 1906. Wabash Savings customers will now have full access to the banking locations and services offered by The First National Bank. May 12 is the last day of business at the 400 Chestnut location.

The transaction coincides with the retirement announcement of two long-time local bankers: William E. Hackler III, President; and James D. Price, CFO. Hackler joined Wabash in 1987 after 34 years in his family’s retail store in Mt. Carmel. James D. Price ends a 65 year career in banking, having started with Columbian Federal Savings and Loan in 1958, serving as a director of Security Bank and Trust starting in 1974, and holding lending positions with Security and Old National Bank until 2001. Price has been with Wabash Savings Bank for 22 years. Long-term bankers, Rena Howell and Donna Goings will also be retiring.
