Couple Arrested Following Domestic Dispute

On 1/14/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Blake W. Watkins, age 25 and Brittany M. Watkins, age 26, both of Mt. Carmel, for Domestic Battery following a physical dispute between the couple at their residence in the 1400 block of W 3rd Street.  Police were called to the scene where they learned both individuals had battered each other during the argument.  Blake was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending a bond setting by a judge.  Brittany was charged and released on a Notice to Appear due to being pregnant and having her small children in need of care.   

Deceptive Practice Warrant Leads To Arrest Of Mt. Carmel Man

On 1/15/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Robert K. Allen, age 64, of Mt. Carmel, on a Wabash County Warrant for Deceptive Practice.  Allen was observed at a residence in the 1200 block of Cedar Lane on an unrelated call.  Allen was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending the posting of a $200 cash bond. 

Mt. Carmel Man Arrested On Trespassing Charge

On 1/16/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Matthew L. Majors, age 46, of Mt. Carmel, for Trespass when Majors returned to a residence in the 900 block of Bainum after being told to stay away by law enforcement.  Majors caused a disturbance with the resident when he arrived and was still present when the police arrived.  The resident elected to sign charges at which time Majors was taken into custody.  Majors was taken to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and later released on a Notice to Appear.   

Mt. Carmel Man Jailed For Stealing Car

On 1/16/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Christopher A. Howell, age 43, of Mt. Carmel, for Theft of Motor Vehicle.  Earlier in the day, MCPD received a complaint regarding a stolen 2009 Dodge Charger from the 700 block of Chestnut St.   That afternoon, the above defendant was found walking near Owensville, Indiana by Owensville Police where he was complaining of a medical issue.  Howell requested medical treatment and was transported back to Mt. Carmel, at his request, for medical treatment.  Around this same time, Gibson County authorities had also located the stolen vehicle near the Fort Branch area left abandoned.   Furthermore, the investigating officer learned that an MCPD officer working the night prior had observed an individual walking near the area of where the stolen vehicle had been taken with Howell wearing the same type and color of clothing from the night.  Based on this information, police took Howell into custody where they found a partial piece of the registration paperwork to the Dodge Charger in his pocket. Howell was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged accordingly and held pending a bond setting by a judge. 


New Application Now Required For Mt. Carmel Special Events

The Mt. Carmel City Council has adopted a new application for any special events requested by outside groups. The application covers events that involves city streets or property such as bar-be-que festivals, concerts at Merchants Park, 5K races, and even events at city parks. City Clerk Ryan Turner says the new application helps streamline events…

Mayor Joe Judge said the new application will allow the city to plan manpower accordingly.

Date Set For Guns 'n Hoses

Save the date for the 2023 Guns and Hoses basketball games in Mt. Carmel. Organizer Rod Rodriguez has announced that the 20th annual game will be played on March 12th at Wabash Valley College. Proceeds from this year’s game, which is highlighted by local police officers and firefighters doing battle, will toward the new Santa House the Retail Merchants Committee has undertaken.

MCHS Students Participate in the 2023 ILMEA All-State Ensembles in Peoria

Four students from Mt. Carmel High School have been chosen and will participate in the 2023 Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All-State All-State Ensembles, January 26-28, 2023 in Peoria, Illinois.

 These students were selected from a rigorous audition process as the top student-musicians representing over 12,000 schools throughout Illinois. Of roughly 2,400 students that auditioned, only a fraction of students were selected to participate in the event. The four MCHS students selected to participate were Chase Dowdy (All State Vocal Jazz Ensemble/ Tenor), Macy Mandrell (All State Vocal Jazz Ensemble/ Soprano), James Martin (All State Vocal Jazz Ensemble/ Bass) & Elijah Sherman (All State Orchestra/ Trombone).

Chase Dowdy is the son of Chris & Tammy Dowdy and is a Senior at MCHS.  Chase is the Senior Drum Major of the MCHS Marching Aces, as well as a member of the MCHS Singing 7.  Recently, Chase represented MCHS while selected for the Eastern Illinois University Honor Band.  Chase has had the opportunity to participate in All State Ensembles both in 2021 (Virtual/ All State Chorus- Tenor 2), and 2022 (All State Honors Chorus- Bass 1).  Chase plans to attend Eastern Illinois University in the fall and will pursue a degree in Music Education.

Macy Mandrell is the daughter of Mike & Kim Mandrell and is a Junior at MCHS.  Macy served as a section leader this year in the MCHS Marching Aces, and is a member of the MCHS Singing 7.  Macy has participated in All State since her sophomore year; 2021, & 2022.

James Martin is the son of Jeremy & Beth Martin and is a Senior at MCHS.  James served 2 years as the drumline section leader  in the MCHS Marching Aces, and is also a member of the MCHS Singing 7.  This is James’ 2nd trip to All State as he was also selected in  2022 (All State Chorus- Bass 1).   James plans to remain active in the performing arts while attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale whilst participating in their ensembles in the fall, meanwhile pursuing a degree in Pre-Med 

Elijah Sherman is the son of Steve & Joy Sherman, and is a Senior at MCHS.  Elijah served as the section leader this year in the MCHS Marching Aces, and is a member of the MCHS Singing 7.  Recently Elijah represented MCHS as he was selected for the Eastern Illinois University Honor Band this fall.   Elijah has participated in All State since his sophomore year: 2021(Virtual/All State Band- Trombone), & 2022 (All State Jazz Band- Jazz Trombone).  Elijah plans to attend Anderson University and pursue a degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering.

RMC Sells Record Amount Of Gift Checks In 2022

2022 was a record setting year for the Wabash County Retail Merchants Committee’s gift check program. The gift checks are sold through the Chamber of Commerce and can only be used at RMC members. Last year, more than $210,360 in gift checks were sold…all of which stays here in our community. The $2103600 is $20,000 more than what was sold in 2021. Merchants gift checks are available year round and if you’d like information in become an RMC member to take advantage of the additional money being spent, call the Chamber office.

Mt. Carmel Woman Picked Up On White County Warrant

On 1/7/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Crystal R. McGillem, age 43, of Mt. Carmel, on a White County Warrant for Burglary and Retail Theft. McGillem was an occupant in a vehicle when the officer observed her resulting in a traffic stop at 6th & Walnut. McGillem was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was issued the warrant and held on a $5000 cash bond, pending extradition back to White County.
