Bleyer Explains Decision For MCHS Remote Learning

At Monday night’s District #348 school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer explained the thinking behind the decision to shift Mt. Carmel High School students go to remote learning for at least the next week….

Despite the transition to remote learning, extra-cirIcular activities are still continuing, something Bleyer said depends on staffing coverage….

Unlike other school districts, Bleyer said the lack of staff coverage is not due to any type of protest by teachers to stay home.

Judge Commends MCPD On Recent Drug Busts

A recent meth bust and recovery of $32,000 in cash is one of the biggest in recent memory according to police chief Mike McWilliams. He told the city council that a search warrant led to the successful recovery of the cash. Mayor Joe Judge commended the police department’s recent arrests from the extensive narcotics investigation… 

55 year old Thomas Gidcumb is free on a $20,000 cash bond after being charged with a variety of offenses in connection to the bust on December 21st at 710 West 6th Street.

Mt. Carmel Helping West Salem With Storm Siren

The city of Mt. Carmel is lending a helping hand to a neighboring community. The city council has approved donating one of the former steel poles that held the stop lights on Market Street to the village of West Salem. According to Mayor Joe Judge, West Salem will use the pole to mount their storm siren that is currently on top of the firehouse.  

Mt. Carmel and West Salem also recently worked together as Mt. Carmel sold the village one of its’ former squad cars.

Illinois State Police Announces December Activity and Enforcement

Illinois State Police District 19 Commander, Captain Nathan Douglas, announced today activity and enforcement figures for the month of December. Troopers in District 19, which includes Wabash, Edwards, Wayne, White, Hamilton, Saline, and Gallatin Counties, recorded 779 incidents during the month.

Enforcement activity consisted of 208 citations and 534 written warnings, including 2 DUIs, 96 speeding citations, 18 occupant restraint citations, 5 distracted driving citations, 6 criminal arrests, and 248 written warnings for speeding. Troopers also assisted 50 motorists, conducted 103 Motor Carrier Safety Inspections, and investigated 29 traffic crashes. There were no fatal traffic crashes investigated by District 19 during December.

Moreover, District 19 issued 121 citations and 272 written warnings for “Fatal Four” violations. These violations are most associated with fatal traffic crashes and include DUI, Speeding, Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, and Distracted Driving.

Illinois State Police Announces 2021 Activity and Enforcement

Illinois State Police District 19 Commander, Captain Nathan Douglas, announced today activity and enforcement figures for calendar year 2021. Troopers in District 19, which includes Wabash, Edwards, Wayne, White, Hamilton, Saline, and Gallatin Counties, recorded 14,712 incidents during the year.

In addition, enforcement figures totaled 6,204 citations and 11,713 written warnings, including 3,186 speeding citations, 46 DUIs, 644 occupant restraint citations, 3,726 written warnings for speeding, and 155 criminal arrests. Troopers also assisted 772 motorists, conducted 1,700 Motor Carrier Safety Inspections, and investigated 391 traffic crashes. There were 11 fatal traffic crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities, investigated in District 19 during calendar year 2021.

During the year, 4,229 citations and 4,573 written warnings were issued for “Fatal Four” violations. These violations are most associated with fatal traffic crashes and include Speeding, DUI, Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, and Distracted Driving.
