Sign Up Now For Operation Share High School Supplies

Sign up for the Operation Share School Supply Program is currently underway for High School students in Wabash County. Families needing help with obtaining school supplies for MCHS students should call the Wabash County WADI office at 618-262-4151 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday to register. Distribution will be August 5th.

Donations of school supplies, masks, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, gym shoes or cash donations are greatly appreciated. They can be dropped off or mailed to WADI at 119 W. 12th Street in Mt. Carmel. Checks should be made out to WADI with “school supplies” on the memo line. 100% of donations go to the school supply program.

Operation Share is a joint effort of Wabash Area Development, Inc. and the Wabash County Ministerial Association.

Mt. Carmel Man Killed In Monday Motorcycle Crash

On 07.12.21 at 11:50 A.M. the Wabash County Sheriff's Office responded to a one vehicle crash.

Unit 1 was was traveling south bound on E 1150 RD approximately 3/10 mile north of N 1560 Blvd when it failed to negotiate a right hand curve. Unit 1 crossed the north bound lane, ran off the left side of the roadway and traveled down the embankment overturning several times. The operator of Unit 1 was thrown from Unit 1. Unit 1 came to rest on it's right side approximately 30 feet beyond where the operator came to rest. Unit 1 sustained in excess of $1,500 damage and was towed from the scene. The operator of Unit 1, who was not wearing a helmet, was fatally injured in the crash.

The operator of Unit 1 was identified as Donald J. Smith 68 of Mt. Carmel, IL.

Chamber Looking Forward To Return Of Ag Days

Mt. Carmel’s Ag Days Festival returns to Market Street three weeks from tomorrow and Chamber of Commerce executive director Lesley Hipsher told the City Council Monday that she’s looking forward to a good year….

Hipsher said Brady Amusements is like most other businesses struggling to find workers to run their rides. That means a longer setup time for the rides as the council approved closing Market Street at the end of the business day on Monday, August 2nd instead of the traditional Tuesday street closure. The 4th Street intersection will be kept open during the day on Tuesday before closing for the full festival set up.

Ag Days is August 4th-7th.

Driver Arrested Following I-57 Crash

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE TRAFFIC CRASH ALERT  

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by

Illinois State Police District 12 

  

WHAT:                      Single Vehicle Personal Injury Traffic Crash

  

WHERE:                   Interstate 57 northbound milepost 176, Cumberland County

 

WHEN:                      July 12, 2021 at approximately 2:02 p.m.

  

VEHICLE:                Unit 1- 2008 Blue Chevrolet Cobalt

                                   

DRIVER:                   Unit 1- Hannah Higgs, 40-year-old female from Calumet Park, IL – Transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

                                   

PRELIMINARY:      A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling north on Interstate 57 near milepost 176 in Cumberland County. The driver of Unit 1 lost control in heavy rain and ran off the roadway to the left and came to rest in the center median.

 

CHARGES:               Unit 1 driver was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Wanted on In-State Warrant.

  

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mt. Carmel Man Faces Criminal Sexual Abuse Charge

On 7/9/21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Nicholas M. Irelan, age 34, for Criminal Sexual Abuse following a sexual abuse allegation investigated by MCPD. During the investigation, officers found evidence to indicate Irelan had inappropriately touched a 17 year old female in a sexual manner on or around 7/6/2021. Irelan was located in 100 block of E 6th Street where he was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail. Irelan was charged and later released after posting an $1800 cash bond.

Sleeping Lawrenceville Woman Arrested On Outstanding Warrants

On 7/12/21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Jennifer R. Jones, age 28, of Lawrenceville, on three outstanding warrants for her arrest. Police were called to an apartment building in the 1000 block of North Cherry Street to investigate suspicious subjects in the alley. Upon arrival, officers located a male subject run towards a gold Buick parked in the area as another officer arrived from the other direction. The male subject entered the passenger side of the vehicle and began moving items around. Officers ordered the subject out of the vehicle and noticed a female seated in the driver’s seat sleeping. Officers recognized the female to be Jennifer Jones although they noted that she was wearing a wig in an attempt to alter her identity. Jones was found to have warrants out of Wabash County, Jasper County, and Vanderburgh County. Jones was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was issued the warrants and held pending the posting of bond. The male subject was released without charges.
