A big crowd turned out tonight for the 94th annual Mt. Carmel Kiwanis Pancake Day Dinner/Supper at the VFW. Hundreds of hungry diners chowed down on all the pancakes they could eat along with sausage, orange juice, milk, and coffee. Proceeds from tonight’s fundraiser go toward various Kiwanis local projects.

The Mt. Carmel Elks Lodge #715 is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarships and the Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards. The ENF awards $2.44 million annually in MVS scholarships to 500 high school seniors nationwide. The first-and second-place awards are among the largest scholarships provided by any major fraternal or service organization. The awards are as follows: First Place: Two $50,000 scholarships ($12,500 per year); Second Place: Two $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 per year); Third Place: Two $30,000 scholarships ($7,500 per year); 14-$20,000 scholarships ($7,000 per year); and 480-$4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year).
Most Valuable Student Scholars are outstanding students who are at or near the top of their classes, active in their schools and communities, and recognized as leaders by their peers. Any high school senior who is a U.S. citizen may apply for a Most Valuable Student Scholarship. Applications will be judged on: Scholarship, Leadership, Financial Need. Applications are available at enf.elks.org/mvs and must be submitted online and are not submitted to the local Elks Lodge. Application deadline is November 15, 2018. The selection of winners begins at the local Lodge level and continues through District, State, and National judging.
Established in 1998, the ENF Legacy Awards program offers 300 college scholarships worth $4,000 each to the children and grandchildren of Elks members. College-bound high school seniors who are the children or grandchildren of dues-paying Elks are welcome to apply. Applicants compete against other children and grandchildren from the state of their sponsoring Elks lodge. They are judged on the core values of the Elks National Foundation: Knowledge, Charity, Community Service, Integrity. Applications are available online and must be submitted online on or before February 1, 2019, at 11:59 a.m. Central Time. Students at Wabash Valley College’s Small World Child Development Center can now rest on benches and a picnic table made from 100 percent recycled plastics.
WVC’s Early Childhood Education students initiated a recycling program in 2016 as part of a community-based project required in their Intro to Early Childhood Education class. The students – together with Small World – entered into the “ABC Promise Partnership” with Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, IN. Green Tree Plastics manufactures recycled plastic products using 100% recycled plastics, no hazardous chemicals, non-organic fillers, or non-organic color concentrates.
The ABC Program, or “a bench for caps,” is a cap-and-lid recycling program specifically designed by schoolchildren for schoolchildren. It is to be a tool in the hands of teachers to teach children about caring for the earth and “green” living. Through the ABC Program, Green Tree Plastics takes discarded plastics and turns them into new pieces of décor and furniture. The plastics are minced and ground through a process called “flow molding,” where the plastics are melted down and molded into benches or picnic tables.
As part of the ABC Program, Small World students collected plastic bottle caps in containers located in six (6) locations on the WVC campus. Since 2016, over 500 pounds of caps were collected from students, parents, and community members. On October 1, 500 pounds of caps were delivered to Green Tree Plastics, where Small World was rewarded for their hard work and dedication in the form of one 4’ gray bench, one 8’ red bench, and one 6’ gray toddler table. WVC’s Teachers of Youth Club provided the funds required for the manufacturing and processing of the benches and table.
WVC Small World Director Carla Cadwalader emphasized that children will continue this earth-conscious project to increase efforts to keep their community “green.” Plastic bottles and caps (stored separately) can be dropped off at the WVC Pool, Main Hall, or the Science Building.

PRELIMINARY: Preliminary investigative details indicate, Unit 1 was eastbound on Jasper county road 1300N just west of West St in Wheeler. Unit 1 ran off the roadway to the south of CR1300N. Unit 1 continued to travel through private yards. Unit 1 struck a parked truck in a driveway and came to rest. The driver of Unit 1 was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, IL for treatment of her injuries.

Savannah Sprunt Fairchild has to get her feisty mother from Alabama to California for her brother’s wedding. But there’s one problem – Mama, Norleen Sprunt, won’t fly! As Savannah prepares herself for this hastily conceived road trip, another complication arises when the over-eager bride-to-be, Hayley Quinn, arrives unannounced to make it to the ceremony with Savannah and Norleen in Mama’s old Buick. But can they make it and keep their sanity? Get lost in this crazy caravan of a comedy as the ladies navigate an unbelievably wild series of mishaps along the way!
As the misadventures multiply, the beleaguered trio rapidly develops the urge to ditch each other anywhere along the way. Rising above their age-old mother-daughter issues, Norleen and Savannah work together to get the nuptials back on track. PRELIMINARY: Preliminary investigative details indicate, Unit 1 was traveling eastbound on Jasper County Road 600 north just west of Jasper County Road 1275 east. Unit 1 failed to negotiate the curve and ran off the roadway to the south of County Road 600N. Unit 1 traveled through the ditch before striking a culvert and went airborne. Unit 1 landed on the roadway and overturned multiple times then came to rest.
Carmi, IL – Illinois State Police District 19 Commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt, announced today activity and enforcement figures for the month of September. Troopers in District 19, which includes Wabash, Edwards, Wayne, White, Hamilton, Saline, and Gallatin Counties, recorded 1,111 incidents during the month.
Enforcement activity consisted of 394 citations and 798 written warnings, including 209 speeding citations, 1 DUI, 42 occupant restraint citations, 10 criminal arrests, and 309 written warnings for speeding. Troopers also assisted 57 motorists, conducted 190 Motor Carrier Safety Inspections, and investigated 22 traffic crashes. There was one fatal traffic crash, resulting in one fatality, investigated by District 19 during September.
Moreover, District 19 issued 264 citations and 377 written warnings for “Fatal Four” violations. These violations are most associated with fatal traffic crashes and include DUI, Speeding, Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, and Distracted Driving.
On October 16, 2018, at 9:43 p.m. Gibson County Sheriff’s Deputies served a Felony Warrant on a Fort Branch man for Sexual Misconduct with a Minor and Child Seduction.
The investigation by Detective Sergeant Roger Ballard began October 4, 2018, after a victim came forward allegations of Sexual Misconduct committed against them by 46 year old Donald E. Overbey Jr. of rural Fort Branch. At the conclusion of his investigation Detective Ballard submitted warrant request to the Gibson County Prosecutors Office for their review.
Yesterday, October 16, Gibson County Sheriff Deputies served an arrest warrant on Mr. Overbey while he was at work at the Toyota Manufacturing Plant located in Gibson County.
Mr. Overbey is charged with Sexual Misconduct With a Minor and Child Seduction. He remains in custody on a $10,000 bond.
All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyo nd a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
