ILLINOIS STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH 

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police Troop 7

WHAT:                      Two Vehicle Fatal Crash

WHERE:                   Illinois 130 approximately ¼ mile south of 300 North, Coles County

WHEN:                      February 13, 2023 at approximately 5:30 a.m.

VEHICLES:              Unit 1 – 2003 White Toyota Highlander

                                    Unit 2 – 2019 White Hyundai Sonata

DRIVERS:                 Unit 1 – 50-year-old male from Fairfield, IL - Deceased, pending next of kin notification

                                    Unit 2 – 47-year-old male from Mattoon, IL - Deceased, pending next of kin notification   

PRELIMINARY:      The preliminary investigation indicates the following:  Unit 1 was traveling north on Illinois 130 approximately ¼ mile south of 300N in Coles County. Unit 2 was traveling south at the same location. For unknown reasons, the driver of Unit 1 crossed the center line and struck the front of Unit 2. The drivers of Unit 1 and Unit 2 were pronounced deceased on scene by the Coles County Coroner.                                          The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours during the crash investigation.

This crash is still under investigation and no further information is available.
