Benefits and Opportunities From Cover Crops and Carbon Markets
CARMI, Ill. - As the concepts of carbon markets and soil health have gained publicity over the past several years, more farmers are looking for ways to integrate cover crops into their row crop systems. Join University of Illinois Extension on Tuesday, March 22 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Extension Office in Carmi for a discussion with agriculture experts as they share the latest findings on carbon markets and soil health.
Commercial Agriculture Educator, Dr. Talon Becker, will cover some of the basic concepts of soil health and how it is impacted by the use of cover crops. He also will provide some recommendations for a standard row cropping system. While you may have heard about carbon markets, do you know what questions to ask to better familiarize yourself with the concept and whether it might be a good fit for your farming operation? University of Illinois PhD student, Sarah Sellars will discuss the background on agricultural carbon markets and how they work and share some informational resources.
This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Light breakfast refreshments will be served. For more information, please visit go.illinois.edu/carbonmarkets or call 618-252-8391.
