From MCPD Police Chief Mike McWilliams: The Mt. Carmel Police Department would like to warn the public of Fentanyl that was recovered on a drug arrest in Mt. Carmel. Fentanyl is frequently mixed with other drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid analgesic that is like morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. In its prescription form, it is prescribed for pain, however it is made illegally also. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are the most common drugs involved in overdose deaths. Everyone, including law enforcement and first responders must use extreme caution in handling Fentanyl laced drugs because something as simple as handling it with bare hands can lead to an overdose. The individual that had possession of the drug believed it to “only” be methamphetamine.
