City Council Votes To Legalize Golf Carts/UTV's On City Streets

After months of discussions, the Mt. Carmel City Council has formally approved the use of golf carts and UTV’s on city streets. The approval came at tonight’s regular council meeting at which the second reading of the ordinance was heard.

Some modifications were made to the original proposed ordinance including the six intersections that will be used for the golf carts and UTV’s to cross Routes 1 and 15 that run through town. Those six are Easy Street and Evergreen Lane; 13th and Cherry, 5th and Walnut; 9th and Market; 3rd and Poplar; and 9th and Oak Streets.  As far as fines for infractions under the new ordinance, the fine for a first offense would be a minimum of $200; $250 for a second offense; and a one year revocation on a third offense. City Clerk Rudy Witsman said it would be approximately 30 days before the ordinance would go into effect.
