Pritzker Signs New Law Designating April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month in Illinois
Palatine, Ill. – Joined by Sikh community members and elected officials at the Sikh Religious Society of Palatine, Governor JB Pritzker signed a new law today designating April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month in the state of Illinois.
“As we shape our state to be a place that embraces our future with open arms, we would do well to take a page from the Sikh community. That’s why I’m proud to sign this legislation designating the month of April as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “As Sikhs throughout the world celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of their first guru, we celebrate you as an integral part of the Illinois community. We are tremendously proud that so many Sikhs call this state their home.”
House Bill 2832 sets aside time to recognize the many ways that Sikh Americans have influenced American history, achievement, culture and innovation. The law takes effect on January 1, 2020.
“Sikhs are a vital part of Illinois’ cultural and economic fabric, particularly in Chicago and the suburbs. It is important that we make an effort to better understand and appreciate the rich history and shared experiences of Sikh Americans,” said Sen. Ann Gillespie (D-Arlington Heights).
“I am pleased to be part of making April an annual recognition of our Sikh community, to shine a light on the vital contributions they have made to our state and nation as a whole, and to create an opportunity to educate our neighbors about their rich history, to foster greater understanding and respect among all of us,” said Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg).
