Wanda Laverne (Simms) Roosevelt, 95, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away on September 26, 2024 at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Wanda was born September 5, 1929 to Albert and Ella (Medler) Simms in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up on a farm west of Albion and married Darrell D. Roosevelt on February 20, 1949. They were married for 72 years.
Over the years she worked at a local drug store, at Pillsbury Elevator in Browns, Illinois, in the Edwards County Courthouse, and at Copeland’s Ready to Wear in Albion, Illinois. She and Darrell were active in their community and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and with the Edwards County Senior Citizens Center for several years. Wanda was a member of the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She spent her last years at Oakview Nursing Home in Mt. Carmel. The care she received there is much appreciated by her family.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband Darrell; her parents Albert and Ella Simms; and her younger siblings Don Simms of Maryland, Bill Simms of Lakeland, Florida, Lois Simms Goodson of Albion, Illinois and Robert Simms of Albion, Illinois.
Wanda is survived by one brother, Larry Simms of Olney, Illinois; a son, Jerry Roosevelt and his wife Patty (Root) Roosevelt of Columbia, Illinois; her daughter, Renee (Roosevelt) Wood and her husband Ken Wood of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive.
Wanda’s feisty personality and attention to detail will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
Visitation for Wanda L. Roosevelt will be held Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.at Ingram Meridith Funeral Home in Albion, Illinois. Service will follow at 12:00 p.m., with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery, south of Albion, Illinois.
