LaVerne J. Sherman, 75

LaVerne J. Sherman, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her daughter’s residence in Bridgeport, Illinois surrounded by the love of her family.  She was born on December 29, 1945 in Burnt Prairie, IL, the daughter of Vernice and Norma Jean (Huddleston) Kuykendall.  LaVerne married Raleigh Eugene Sherman on November 2, 1967 and he preceded her in death on September 12, 2006.

LaVerne faced each day with a big smile on her face.  She was a proud mother and grandmother.  She always looked forward to visits with her family and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart.  When able, LaVerne loved to volunteer her time helping others in need and spent several years volunteering as a hospice caretaker.  Among her hobbies, she enjoyed crocheting gifts for her family.  LaVerne had many great friends who she enjoyed visiting with.  She was a member of Barneys Prairie Church and throughout her life she stayed strong in her faith.  LaVerne will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

LaVerne will be remembered by her children, Kerri (Chris) Higgins of Bridgeport, IL, Kelly Moody of Land O’ Lakes, FL, Kristi (Danny) Johnson of Clarksville, TN and Raleigh (Robin) Sherman, Jr. of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Donovan Higgins and Damian Higgins both of Olney, IL, Shane (Danielle) Pride of Godfrey, IL, Lacey (Cory) Heineman of Land O’ Lakes, FL, Cory (Stephanie) Johnson, Jessica (Tyler) Wilson, Zachariah (Kacey) Johnson and Gunner Johnson all of Clarksville, TN; step grandchildren, Quintin (Jessica) Keller and Donald Keller both of Jasonville, IN; great grandchildren, Layla Heineman, Iris Heineman, Rosie Heineman and Eliza Wilson; step great grandchildren, Cassondra, Gavin, Kyli, Kaitlin, Brayden and Logan; siblings, Freda Barnes of Atlanta, Ga, Jean (Jim) Michels of Carmi, IL, Stella Williams of Taylorville, IL, Wilma Richards of West Virgina, James Kuykendall of Carmi, IL, Lloyd Kuykendall of Alabama and Tracy Rush of Carmi, IL.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raleigh; and brother-in-law, Rodney Williams.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2021, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.  Social distancing practices will be in place and facial coverings will be required. 

A Private Family Funeral Service will be held at Keepes Funeral Home with Pastor Brenda Culver officiating.  Burial will take place at Allendale Cemetery where LaVerne will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Raleigh. 

Memorial contributions may be made in LaVerne’s memory to Wabash Rally Against Cancer or to Residential Hospice.  Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863.
